San Jose Elementary Mural

Panda Pride!

For the students, teachers and staff at San Jose Elementary in Jacksonville, FL. More about the process and additional images below. ︎

Jacksonville is where I was born and raised and I wanted to give back to the community that had given me so much through art. It was glorious to see the joy on the kid’s faces as they watched me work. There was even the opportunity for a few of them to help throughout the process. Listening to their imaginative and curious little minds while answering their many questions was very inspiring. Makes you realize the older we get we can begin to lose those qualities if we don’t keep it a concentration somewhere in our busy lives.

When the opportunity arose I knew pretty quickly the concept I was going to approach for the mural. With pandas being their mascot and “Panda Pride” their mantra, exploring the interaction between these animals and the kids through play and inventiveness became apparent. With only 3 days to complete I had to focus and work quick, but diligently. Having the overall idea in mind I began without preliminary sketching, just going for it and letting each interaction flow from one to the next; ultimately finishing in 2 1/2 days.

Many thanks to San Jose Elementary, the Duval County Public School System
and all the great kids and staff I had the pleasure of meeting. Hope you enjoy for many years to come.
